Your Personal 2024 in Music

As 2024 draws to a close, it is a good time to step back from the day’s to-do list and think about what the year means to you. With our noses to the daily grindstone, it’s often hard to see the totality of our accomplishments. Take a moment to reflect on your personal 2024 in music.

How was your 2024 in music?

What performances are you most proud of?

What was your biggest musical challenge, and how did you overcome it?

Did you learn a new piece, technique, or skill that felt like a breakthrough?

Did you turn a part of your life around or make a comeback?

For my own accounting, I want to celebrate my continuing contributions to performing organizations I have worked for this year: my week with the Boston Symphony, fall performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera with the San Francisco Opera, and my reunion concert with the Pitzen Brass Ensemble. Since I am no longer performing multiple times a week, I continue to learn the new balance of keeping my chops up while making a go as a publisher of meaningful music.

As a publisher, I have been confronted with the myriad of decisions and considerations of being a sheet music publisher in the era of internet marketing. I have experienced the high of an encouraging first day of business followed by some very lean months. I have learned, and continue to learn, that I need to find ever new ways to offer value to my potential customers. I am learning how to increase my visibility in the world of people who need sheet music. I have met and learned from some remarkable musicians: the violinist, pianist, and composer, Gregor Huebner and the arranger Barry Black. I continue meaningful relationships with the SAKURA Cello Quintet and the members of the STL Trombones.

We’re all in it together

As we leave this year behind, don’t forget that everyone has their own mountain to climb. You never know what someone’s personal struggles are. Be kind; be encouraging; be enthusiastic. Do what you love and love what you do.

Good luck in your continued musical endeavors in 2025!
