Bruce Broughton’s Variations for Tuba and Piano

Bruce Broughton is the composer of music for such TV shows as Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, and Dallas. He composed the scores for the films Silverado, Young Sherlock Holmes, and The Monster Squad. He is also the composer of a large body of concert music. Last night, I had the pleasure and privilege of hearing the premiere of Variations for tuba and piano.

Commissioned in 2014 for the tubist Peter Wahrhaftig, the piece for many reasons had not yet been performed. The original scoring is for tuba and brass ensemble, and it was intended to be performed by the Bay Brass. Although that performance is still forthcoming, last night’s premiere for a version for tuba and piano was given by Gene Pokorny, tubist with the Chicago Symphony.

The Variations are, as you might expect, a tour de force for the tuba, and Mr. Pokorny, of course, made the piece his own. As the centerpiece of his recital, Variations held my attention for every second. Gene’s embrace of every note in the performance was thrilling.

We brass musicians look forward to the next performance, publication, and hopefully a recording, of Bruce Broughton’s Variations.
